The Vasse Coal Mining Project is located on the Vasse Coal Shelf, a Permian Coal Seam, spanning from Vasse Newtown (next to Busselton) down through Margaret River Region and ending in Augusta. The project currently consists of 7 mining leases along this self over approximately 6000 ha of land with a coal resource of approximately 60 million tonnes.
Some Water Pollution Risks due to location:
- The Vasse Coal Self self runs beneath and through the South West two main aquifers the Leederville and the Yarragadee posing the threat of water pollution and disruption of the aquifer itself. For more information on fragility of our aquifers click here to view our aquifer page.
- The proposed mine site is situated on one of the Margaret River tributaries up stream from the towns water supply catchments at 10 Mile Brook Dam. Therefore any water pollution can flow directly into 10 Mile Brook Dam.
- The proposed mine may be compelled, for technical and/or operational reason to partially dewater the aquifer. Due to lack of information on our aquifers this could have detrimental results to the surrounding water supply for the area as well as now requiring above ground storage of water that may contain heavy metals and salt bearing acid leaches.
